Merle F. Smock 1921-2014

Merle F. Smock, 92, of Earlville, died Friday, February 28, 2014, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester. Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Delaware, by Pastor Donald Krause. The family will greet friends from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, March 3, 2014, at Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Earlville, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Burial: Fairview Cemetery, Earlville.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille; children, Deb (Bob) Hutchcroft of Bellevue, Dale (Louise) Smock of Earlville, and Donna (Jeff Nefzger) Bolsinger of Manchester; grandchildren, Ryan Hutchcroft, Nicole Hutchcroft, Nick (Macy) Smock, Troy Smock, Sadie Bolsinger, and Cole Bolsinger; and great-grandchildren, Xander and Ryder Smock.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Alan; and three brothers, Maurice, Harold, and Ralph Smock.

Merle was born December 20, 1921, at home in Earlville, the son of James and Minnie (Koehne) Smock. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during WWII. Merle married Lucille Bartels on October 28, 1955, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Monticello; they were married for 58 years. . He was a truck driver for Farm Services for 26 years. Merle was a volunteer for the Earlville Fire Department for 37 years, a trustee of Fairview Cemetery for 30 years, on the Earlville City Council for 8 years, and was a member of American Legion Post # 436 of Earlville, and St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Delaware. He enjoyed camping with his family, wood working, and creating clocks.

Memorials may be directed to Camp Courageous or St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Delaware, in Merle's memory.

The family would like to extend their thanks to the Earlville Fire Department, and Ambulance Service, and to the visiting nurses.
