Funeral services for Verla Bernice Hakanson were held on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006, at 10 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in LuVerne with Reverend Robert Connor officiating. Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery in Earlville. Arrangements were handled by the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home of LuVerne.

Verla B. Hakanson was born Nov. 7, 1920, in Earlville, the daughter of Lawrence and Sabra (Carpenter) Bishop. She grew up and attended school in Earlville and graduated from Earlville High School.

On Nov. 23, 1938, Verla was united in marriage to Harry W. Hakanson in Tipton. After their marriage, the couple farmed the family farm for seven years before moving to Forest City where they went into the grocery business. Harry's job in the grocery business moved them to various towns, such as Manchester, Monticello and Marengo before they settled in Blairstown from 1954-1973. While in Blairstown, Verla worked at the telephone office and at the Benton County State Bank for 15 years. In 1973, they moved to LuVerne where they operated The Corner Store until retiring in 1994.

Verla enjoyed golfing, bowling, traveling, working crossword puzzles, doing embroidery and having coffee with friends. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, the UMW and the LuVerne Community Club.

Verla died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2006, at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital in Humboldt. She was 86.

She is survived by her children, Eugene Hakanson and wife Sandra of Portland, Ore.; Dean Hakanson and wife Lisa of Eveleth, Minn.; Joanne Patterson and husband Dean of Parkersburg; Betty Mishler and husband Chris of Glenville, Minn.; Harry D. Hakanson and wife Alinda of Green Valley, Ariz.; grandchildren, Tony Patterson, Debra Hogelucht, Tanya Miller, Daryl Woodward, Kathy Jo VanEllen; seven great-grandchildren and a brother, Frank Bishop of Manchester.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Harry W. Hakanson, brother, Clarence Bishop and sister, Dorothy Otley.

Memorials can be made to the Hospice of Humboldt County.
