William Wallace Matthews was born near New York City on March 16, 1825, and died at the home of his son, J.C. Matthews, at Greeley, Iowa November 4, 1904, aged 80 years, 7 months and 18 days.

When he was five years old his parents removed to Brantford, Canada, and there resided for fifteen years, going from there to Boone county, Illinois.

In 1846 he was united in marriage with Miss Jane Cornwell, whose demise occurred on February 10, 1900.

In 1852 Mr. Matthews made a visit to Iowa, with the intention of purchasing a farm, but returned without doing so, but in 1864 he came again, bringing his family with him, and purchased a farm located in Colony and Elk townships, on which they lived until 1895, when thy located in Earlville and lived there until
after the death of his wife, and from that time until his decease he made his home with those of his children who resided in this county.

Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Matthews, one daughter died in her infancy, a son dying at the age of eight years, and another son, Dr. T. G. Matthews died at Miles City, Montana, almost two years ago. Their surviving children are George W., J. W. and Stephen A., of Earlville; Lafayette of this city; J.G. of Greeley, and Nancy E. Coe of Wentworth, South Dakota.

Mr. Matthew's was a member of the Masonic and I.O.O.F. lodges at Earlville and of Nazareth Commandery, Knights Templar of this city. He was a man of sterling integrity, a kind and affectionate husband and parent, and an exemplary man in every respect.

The funeral was held yesterday at the M. E. Church in Earlville, under the auspices of the Masonic order. Rev. Stoddard, pastor of the Congregational church and Rev. Young, pastor of the M. E. Church, Earlville, officiated.

The pall bearers were, Geo Hunt, Wm, Hockaday, John Cruise, W. T. Wood, A. B. Holbert and Wm. Odell.
