Death of Levi O. Stevens

Mr. Levi O. Stevens, long a resident of Delaware County, died at the home of his
daughter in Blair, Nebraska, on Sept. 16th, in his eighty fifth year. Perhaps no resident was better known in the people of the county than was the deceased. He came to Almoral in 1858 and was one of the principal men concerned in the establishment of the Academy at that place , remaining at the head of the Board of Trustees until the institution went out of
existence. He also engaged in farming and remained in that occupation during all the rest of his active live.

For several years he was Secretary and Treasurer of the Delaware County Mutual
Fire Insurance Company and in that capacity became known through out the county. For nearly ten years he was president of the Harvest Home Association and through this formed a circle of acquaintances extending beyond the county in
which he lived.

Mr. Stevens was born at East Hardwick, Vermont, June 7, 1819. He was a graduate from the University of Vermont with the class of 1844. After several years spent in teaching in Vermont and Massachusetts, he came to Iowa in 1852 residing for a short time at Dubuque and later at Bowen's Prairie and Hopkinton. In 1858
he moved in Almoral where he lived until 1896 when the family moved to Grinnell, where a son was attending college. Since May 1902, he had lived at Blair Nebraska.

Levi O. Stevens and Janette Lease were married at Rock Island, Illinois, September 15, 1853. Five sons and three daughters were born to this union of whom the following, together with their mother, are now living; Mrs. Ellis H.
Kenyon, of Los Angeles, Cal.; Joseph L. Stevens, Stockton, Kansas,; Mrs. James H. Adams, Blair, Neb.; Charles O. Stevens, Washington, D.C.; Thadeus F. Stevens, Creston, Nebraska; and Philip H. Stevens, Lansing Michigan.

In early life Mr. Stevens united with the Congregational Church of his native place, transferring his membership to the church at Almoral upon becoming a resident there. He remained to the end of his life a member of that church.

The funeral services conducted by Rev. J. C. Stoddard, were held in the Congregational Church at Earlville on Saturday, September 19, and the body was buried in the cemetery at that place.
