Funeral services for Lester Richards, 72 who died December 8 at Iowa City hospital after a long illness, were Wednesday, Dec. 12, at the Congregational church at Edgewood. Rev. Ben Shaw officiated at the funeral and Mrs. Fred Smith played soft hymns. The pallbearers were all friends and neighbors from Mr. Richards home near Manchester. Burial was in the Edgewood cemetery.
A son of the late John and Lydia Allaway Richards, pioneers, Mr. Richards was born in Iowa, June 19, 1893 and had spent nearly all his life in Delaware county, receiving his early education here.
On December 23, 1926 he was united in marriage at Elkader with Miss Margaret Fisher, and for the past four years they have made their home in Manchester. Surviving are the widow; a daughter, Mrs. Ethel Ball of Los Angeles, Calif.; two grandchildren; two half sisters, Mrs. Margaret Harris of Greeley and Miss Gretchen Richards. A grandson was reported missing in action during the late war.
A farmer for most of his mature life, Mr. Richards affiliated with the Methodist church. he bore the reputation of a worthy citizen and a man of upright life and possessed many friends who will sympathize with the family in the sorrow occasioned by his death.
