Clifford Saunders 1915-2001

Clifford Saunders, 86, died early Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, in Living Center West, Cedar Rapids, following an extended illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, United Church of Hopkinton, Methodist Center. Burial: Hopkinton Cemetery. The Rev. Marti Montovani will officiate at the services. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Goettsch Funeral Home, Hopkinton.

Surviving are four children, Richard (Constance), Manchester, Phillip (Roberta), Cedar Rapids, Cheryl (Robert) Husk, Salem, W.Va., and Rosemary (Samuel) Bacon, Clermont, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Russell (Helen) Saunders, Hopkinton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Junior and Thomas.

Clifford was born May 7, 1915, in Hopkinton, the son of Thomas A. and Elizabeth DeWald Saunders. He graduated from the Hopkinton High School in 1934 and later attended Lenox College in Hopkinton. Clifford married Darlene Isabel Moler on June 9, 1937, in Buck Creek Methodist Church.

Clifford then went to work for Lux Leghorn Land Farms until 1951 and then was employed at Allis Chalmers in Cedar Rapids until 1963. Clifford worked at Johnson Feed Mill in Hopkinton for 22 years, retiring in 1985.

Darlene preceded him in death on Nov. 3, 1978.

He was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. He loved fishing and horseshoes. Cliff was a true citizen of Hopkinton; he was comfortable there.

A memorial fund has been established.
