Roy Saunders,71, of Hopkinton, died Tuesday, March 4, 2003, in Iowa Veterans Home, Marshalltown, following an extended illness. Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Golden Congregational Church, rural Ryan. Burial, with military honors: Hopkinton Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Goettsch Funeral Home, Hopkinton.

Surviving are four children, Steve (Carol) Saunders, Center Junction, Sindee Nash, Boone, Daniel (Joanie) Saunders, Cedar Rapids, and Ann (Leon) Wickman, Manchester; 11 grandchildren, Steven Jr., Christopher, Molly, Beth, Kelly, April, Amanda, Greg, Ethan, Austin and Hannah; two stepgrandchildren, Daniel and Jenny; two great-grandsons, Brandon and Logan; a sister, Ellen Pritchard, Park Rapids, Minn.; and four brothers, Paul (Barb) Saunders, Wyoming, Chet Saunders, Eden Prairie, Minn., Lyle (Gail) Saunders, Manchester, and Leo (Jeanette) Saunders, Ryan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Sydney and John; and a sister, Gladys.

Roy Saunders was born Nov. 9, 1931, in Pequot Lakes, Minn., the son of Ray and Marie Trulsen Saunders. The family moved to rural Hopkinton in 1947 and Roy graduated from the Buck Creek School in 1950. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Roy married Pauline Gienapp on Dec. 19, 1954. Roy farmed in the Hopkinton and Ryan area until 1990. His health caused him to move to the Iowa Veterans Home in April 1999.

Roy enjoyed traveling, woodworking and spending time with family and friends.
