LA CROSSE, Wis. - Charles J. "Chuck" Offerman, 71, of La Crosse, Wis., passed away Friday, Sept. 10, 2010, of complications from a hemorrhagic stroke.

Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home, 200 West Ave. S., La Crosse, with the Rev. Roger Hjelle officiating. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

He was born on Feb. 25, 1939, in Dubuque, son of Ray and Callista (Keane) Offerman, of Dyersville, Iowa. He graduated from St. Columbkille's High School in Dubuque in 1957, and then attended Loras College in Dubuque for two years before graduating from the University of Iowa in 1962.

Chuck enlisted in the Navy in 1962 and served for four years. During that time, he served for a short time on the USS Savage in Vietnam. Following his discharge from the Navy, he settled in the San Francisco area, where he lived for 35 years.

He worked in real estate and was also a co-owner and operator of a wine vineyard.

He married Sharlene Houghtaling on Oct. 21, 1967, in Dallas, and they later divorced. In 2000, Chuck moved to La Crosse to be closer to his sister. He met Mary (Bell) Vanderzee, whom he married on Aug. 20, 2005.

Chuck loved music and was a past member of the Coulee Chordsmen.

He was an avid golfer and golfed at many of the famous golf courses throughout Europe and the United States, including St. Andrews, Carnoustie and Pebble Beach.

Surviving are his wife, Mary; and her children and grandchildren; his sister, Joanne (Jim) Putz, of La Crosse; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Robert "Bob" Offerman.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to National Public Radio, Wisconsin Public Television and to the charity of the donor's choice.
