PFC Russell Edward SHEPPARD
Manchester, IA – PFC Russell SHEPPARD, 24, son of E. P. SHEPPARD of Manchester, is another Delaware County war casualty, according to word received from the War Department this week by his father. The message stated that SHEPPARD was killed in England Sept. 28 (1944).
His relatives had received a communication from him dated Sept. 21, in which he told of his unit, the Eighth Air Force having received the Presidential Citation for outstanding service in a German bombing raid.
Born (02MAY1920) on a farm in Delhi Township, Delaware County, Iowa, Russell grew to manhood there. Attended the Delhi Consolidated School and assisted his father in farming. He was employed by a Davenport ice cream company prior to his enlistment in December 1943.
His training was secured at Sheppard Field, Tex., Lowery Field, Colo., and in a Sioux City camp as a ground crew man in the air service. In June 1943, SHEPPARD went overseas to England. His marriage to Lillian R--- took place at Crete?, Neb. March 1943.
Survivors include his widow, his father, three brothers, Frank and Floyd SHEPPARD of Cedar Rapids and Howard E. SHEPPARD 1205 West Fifth Street, Waterloo (IA). His mother died several years ago.
