January 02, 1908S. R. Young Passes Away,
Pioneer Resident of this CommunitySamuel R. Young, one of the county’s old and highly respected citizens, passed away at the home of his son, D. H. Young on Fayette Street Wednesday evening January 1, 1908, at seven o’clock, aged eighty-two years, nine months and 9 days. He had not enjoyed the best of health for a number of years, but had been able to get about during much of the time, and had been confined to his room for only about a week, the cause of his death being the infirmities incidental to old age.
Mr. Young was born in Maryland, near the Pennsylvania state line, the date of his birth being March 22, 1825. When a boy of about sixteen he came west to Illinois, locating in the vicinity of Rockford, where he resided for a number of years and where he met and was united in marriage with Miss Sarah E. Adams. In the year 1855 Mr. Young came to Delaware County and here he made his home ever since. For some years after coming to this county he was located in Manchester, being engaged in the carpenter business here.
Later he removed to the farm in Milo township, which he conducted for several years and also engaged in the agricultural implement business on the West side for many years. Seven years ago he and Mrs. Young came to Manchester to reside with their son. Mrs. Young died about five years ago. In his younger days Mr. Young held various township offices and was one of the country’s honest and reliable citizens. His death removes from earth one who saw the country grow from a wilderness into a thickly settled section and played a considerable part in its development. The news of his death was received with profound sadness by all who knew him. Mr. and Mrs. Young were the parents of two children –W. W., who died about twenty years ago, and D. H. of this city.
