Mrs. O. W. Smith is the victim of a serious and deplorable accident caused by falling down a stairway last evening. The accident resulted in the fracture of the neck of the femur, the socket joint in the hip. Mrs. Smith was leaving the home of Mrs. Wilse Pulver of Delhi when the accident occurred. She stepped out onto the porch and walked to the stairway descending to the walk, expecting to find the first step at the edge of the porch. The stairway, on the contrary, set back a couple of feet from the edge and in the dusk of the evening Mrs. Smith did not observe it. And so unconsciously stepped into space and plunged down for several feet. She was at once brought to her home in Hopkinton, and as the nature of the fracture demanded every precaution in the setting , Dr. Hejinian of Anamosa, was called to assist Dr. Cummings. The patient, as a matter of course, is suffering greatly from the nature of the fracture and the contusions incident to the fall, and will be confined for long periods of weeks during the healing period. Many friends are giving evidence of their sincere sympathy for the unfortunate victim. – Hopkinton Leader.
