ANCIENT CRIME IS RECALLED
Maquoketa-(Special)-It is 75 years this week since Absalom Montgomery was indicted by a grand jury, whose foreman was David Sears, for the murder of Andrew M. Brown, the father of W. F. Brown, who lives in North Dearborn street. The murder occurred April 30, 1852. Mrs. Brown died here only a few years ago, past 90 years of age, and their only son still lives here. He served for more than 30 years as janitor of the school buildings, having had to give up his work only two years ago, because of ill health. Montgomery was convicted in Jackson County, but upon an appeal, through a writ of error, taken to a Delaware County court, was acquitted though there was no doubt of his guilt. This was one of the few Jackson County murders to occur in this vicinity.
