Thursday, February 24, l92lJ.W. HONNOLD, one of Leon's well known and highly respected pioneer citizens, passed away last Saturday night about ll:00 o'clock after a lingering illness of several months following a stroke of paralysis. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon from the Methodist Church, the services being in charge of the Masonic Lodge. Interment followed in the Leon Cemetery. MR. HONNOLD has held the high esteem of the people of Decatur County during all the years that he has resided here. His passing is a great shock to all and the surviving members of the family have the sincere sympathy of all.
JAMES W. HONNOLD, son of JACOB Y. and SARAH HONNOLD, was born in Muskingum County, Ohio, Nov. 8, l84l, departed this life at his home in Leon, Iowa, February l9, l92l, aged 79 years, 3 months and ll days.
While but a lad he came to Iowa with his parents, who entered land and settled on a farm near Humeston, Iowa, they being among the early pioneers of this part of Iowa, and he grew to manhood on the old HONNOLD homestead.
When the Civil War commenced, he was among the first to enlist, being a charter member of Co. L, Third Iowa Cavalry, which was organized at Garden Grove, being mustered in on August l5, l86l. He served his country for four years, re-enlisting as Veteran Volunteer on Feb. 2, l864. He was severely wounded at the battle of Big Blue in November, l864, and was finally mustered out of the service on April 24, l865, on account of disability from his wound. His death leaves but two members of Co. L residing in this vicinity, CAPT. J.D. BROWN and E.J. SANKEY, and they were both severely wounded.
He was united in marriage in l865 to MISS JENNIE DAIN, and to this union were born three children, two surviving, MRS. CORA HULL and FRED J. HONNOLD, of Leon, a daughter dying in infancy. His wife died May 3l, l879, and he was married Sept. l, l88l, to MISS ELLA HONNOLD, the wife and one son, LEE HONNOLD, of Excelsior Springs, Mo., surviving, their eldest son, LOUIS HONNOLD, dying in service in France during the late war. He is also survived by two brothers, TAYLOR HONNOLD, of Humeston and CHARLES W. HONNOLD, of Indianola, both of whom are in feeble health.
Soon after being married, MR. HONNOLD moved to Corydon, and in l87l came to Leon, where he has since made his home. For many years he was engaged in the stock shipping business and later in farming. He was twice elected Sheriff of Decatur County, serving from l887 to l89l.
