METTIE GARDNER STEWART was born at Leon, Iowa, August l9th, l873, and spent her childhood and early girlhood there. She was married to JOHN STEWART at Leon, December 22, l889, and later moved to Yates Center, Kansas. She was naturally a good woman and had a large circle of friends, who held her in highest esteem for her sterling worth and Christian character.

She was formerly affiliated with the Baptist Church until she came to Yates Center, Kansas, when she became a member of The Church of Christ, and lived as a faithful and earnest disciple of Christ. She became afflicted in January of l9l9, and sought medical and surgical aid in the hope of regaining her former health, but the disease, cancer, fastened itself on her with increasing and distressing power. She took to her bed about fourteen weeks ago and still hoped for recovery. She was cheerful and hopeful and when it appeared that she must pay the debt of this life in death, she expressed her readiness and willingness to depart in the hope of the Savior. Her sufferings of long weeks ended on August 30th, l920, when she fell asleep in peace and the full assurance of faith. Her age was forty-seven years and ll days. She leaves a mother, two sisters, husband and one son, RAYMOND, and one granddaughter, and a large circle of friends and relatives to mourn her loss.

Funeral services were held at the house by Elder M. Browning of the Church of Christ. The remains were shipped to Leon, Iowa, to be buried in the Palestine Cemetery, near the home of her girlhood.
