SAMUEL A. OILER was born April 8, l843, in Pennsylvania, and died May 28th, l920, at his home in Leon, Iowa, aged 77 years and one month. Early in life he was baptized into the Lutheran Church and adhered to this faith till his death. When the Civil War broke out he enlisted at an early date in the Army, becoming a member of Co. D., l87th Pa. Volunteers. Being wounded he was sent home but returned to his regiment later as a member of Company E.

He moved to Iowa in l899 and resided on a farm near Davis City till eight years ago, then moved to Leon, Iowa, where he has resided since. In l866 he was married to ROSANNA MILLER and to this union were born eight children: ELMER OILER, of Ottumwa; JOHN OILER, deceased; SYLVESTER OILER, Leon; DESS PIERCY, Leon; NAN GODELL, Des Moines; FRANK OILER, Davis City; IRENE PRIEST, Elston; WALTER OILER, Elston.
His wife survives. The deceased had been in poor health, taking to his bed in January. He was a member of the fast thinning corps of the veterans of the G.A.R.
The latter acted as his pall bearers.

Funeral services were conducted from the home by Rev. G.T. Ronk. Interment in the Leon Cemetery.
