Donald Royce Reed, age 72 of Shannon City, Iowa, the son of Glenn Clinton and Mildred Violet (Moore) Reed, was born May 31, 1936 at home south of Andover, Missouri. He died in Lamoni, Iowa Saturday, October 18, 2008.

Don grew up in the Andover, Missouri area until he was 13 when he moved with his mom to Des Moines, Iowa. Later they moved to Arizona for a few years. In 1954 he came back to Andover and farmed with his dad. He was a mechanic in his own garage in Davis City until he was burned in an accident in 1963. After his recovery, he worked for a janitorial service in Des Moines. In the 1970's Don bought an auto-crushing machine and operated R&R Auto Crushing for 35 years. He retired, but missed the work, so he opened D&C Auto Crushing with his son Clinton.

In 1955 Don married Verna May Moore in Mt. Ayr, Iowa. He was the father of ten children, Jacky, Ed, Rod, Clinton, Penny, Derick, Bryan, Andrea, Donetta, and Veronica.

Don loved everything about cars. He enjoyed racing cars and preparing them for demolition. He was a member of the National Guard in Arizona and Missouri in 1955 and the Oddfellows in Des Moines.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Glenn Reed and Mildred Smith; infant son Jacky Donald Reed; 12 year old daughter Penny Kay Reed; grandson Ashton Johns; brothers Rex and Jimmie Reed; and sister Dorothy Reed.

Survivors include his wife Verna Reed of Shannon City, Iowa; children: Ed Reed of Des Moines, Rod & Kathy Reed of Osceola, Iowa, Clinton & Shelley Reed of Nevada, Iowa; Derick Reed of Kellerton, Iowa, Bryan & Becky Reed of Osceola, Andrea & Jack Silsby of Van Meter, Iowa; Donetta & Jeremy Phelps of Kellerton; and Veronica Johns Coulthard & Jimmy Coulthard of Lamoni; 21 grandchildren: Penny, Sherry, Megan, Destiny, Zach, Midori, Mikayla, Andrew, Shelton, Austin, Kaleb, Orrey, Jacky, Ashley, Nichole, Bradley, Brice, Nikalo, Grant, Brianna, and Owen; great grandson Ryan; stepmother Doris Reed of Lamoni; sisters: Twyla and Tom Smith of Greenville, South Carolina and Peggy and Carroll Wicker of Townsville, South Carolina; brothers Eldon Reed of Des Moines and Glenn B. Reed and Rose of Lamoni, Ronnie and Vickie Reed and Bob and Dee Reed, all of Davis City; nieces and nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.

Visitation was held October 24, 2008 from 10-11:30 a.m. followed by a memorial service at the Lamoni Community of Christ Church in Lamoni, Iowa at 12 noon with Elder Morris Boswell officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements were through the Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home of Leon and Lamoni, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, there has been a Don Reed Memorial Fund established at the Great Western Bank, 100 E. South Street, Mount Ayr, Iowa.
