Lela E. Jones, the daughter of Walter Eldridge and Eva Mae (Waddell) Hartley, was born June 27, 1900, at Nebraska City, Nebraska, and died at her home at Lamoni Nursing and rehabilitation Center in Lamoni, Iowa on May 19, 1998, at the age of 97 years.

Lela went to country school and graduated in 1919 from Lamoni High School. She then taught Tuskego Country School for a few years.

On December 2, 1924, she married Ernest Robert 'Bob' Jones at Mount Ayr, Iowa. The couple was blessed with six children. After their marriage, they lived in Leon Iowa then Davis City. Iowa before returning to Lamoni. Bob died In 1984. In August 1993 Lela moved into the Lamoni Manor.

She was a kind, loving, and good mother. She was an excellent cook and a hard worker. She raised a large garden and canned the produce. She sewed for the children and crocheted.

Lea was a member of the Davis City Garden Club and a member of the Baptist Church. She was baptized as an adult into the Brick Church at Davis City.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, infant son Donald Dean; daughter Lydia Drummond in 1997; two infant granddaughters: Jo Ann and Lucinda Waugh; six brothers; and two sisters.

Survivors include her four children: Bob Jones and Maxine of Indianola, Iowa: Mary Lou Waugh and husband Doyle; Bill L. Jones and wife Sharon; and Carol Shields, all of Lamoni; nine grandchildren: Jeff Jones and wife Cindy of Des Moines. Iowa: Cheryl Houghton of Lamoni; Debra Drummond and Steve Mason of Leon, Iowa; Cynthia Drummond of Lamoni: Danny Waugh and wife Denyse of Leon; Brenda McLaughlin and husband Jim of Overland Park, Kansas: Greg Jones and wife Lisa of Lebanon, Missouri; Chanda Buckingham and husband Kim of Leon: and Laura Horzuesky and husband Chuck of Des Moines; 15 great-grandchildren; sister Helen Hill of Leon; nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at the Slade • O'Donnell Funeral Home in Lamoni, Iowa on Friday, May 22, 1998, at 10:30 a.m. with Elder Bud Atwood officiating. Burial was In the Rose Hill Cemetery, Lamoni, Iowa.
