John Kenneth Omstead was born November 30, 1902, to Eugene and Elba Shackleford Omstead at Pawnee, Missouri near Eagleville. He died at the Lamoni Manor in Lamoni, Iowa, on January 16, 1992.

Most of his 89 years were spent in the Lamoni area. He had five sisters, Verna, Elsie, Myrtle, Pearl, and Rachel; one brother, Edward; one half-sister, Lola, and a half-brother, Orie.

On July 10, 1927, he was married to Margaret Louise Ashburn. Three sons and two daughters were born to this union.

As a youngster, he worked with his father as an active part of his sawmill crew, and later as a young man he boasted "top corn picker" picking a record-breaking 120 bushel a day a hand. John began his own agricultural trucking business in Lamoni and for many years, saved nearly every farmer in the surrounding communities.

He was an avid and successful gardener taking great pride in producing the highest quality vegetables. One of his great joys was sharing the fruits of his efforts.

He was preceded in death by two sons; Kenneth Billie and Keith Eugene, parents, and siblings.

Survivors include wife, Margaret of the home, two daughters, Marlene Birlingmair and husband, David, Ames; Myrna Morris and husband, Russell, Lamoni; and one son, Kevin, Lamoni; thirteen grandchildren; Rosanna Omstead, Dianna Hann, and husband, Randy, Luanne Venter, Suzanne Omstead, Shawn Birlingmair, and wife, Dana, Kimberly Hoover, and husband, Davis, Douglas Birlingmair, and wife Laura, Michelle Morris, Sheryl Morris-Hentz, Michael Morris, and wife, Deborah, Patrick Morris, Jordan Omstead, and Katie Omstead; seven great-grandchildren, Stacy and Katie Venter; Ryan Hentz, Travis and Kaleb Hoover, Heather Haurum, and Joel Birlingmair. He is also survived by one half-sister, Lola Harp, and husband, Bill, of Independence, Missouri, and many other friends and relatives.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., January 20, 1992, at the Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home in Lamoni, Iowa, with Elder Charles 0. Snethen officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, in Lamoni. A memorial fund has been established by the family.
