Norma Arthea Stevenson, daughter of Fayette Vernon and Mable Frances (Adair) Cole, was born August 3, 1924, at Oshoto, Wyoming, and passed away at the Lamoni Nursing and Rehab Center in Lamoni, Iowa, on June 18, 2002, at the age of 77 years.

Arthea moved with her family to Lamoni in the early 1940s where she finished high school in May of 1943. In 1944 Arthea married Rollin Ballantyne. Four children were born to this union: Danny, Crystal LeeAnn, Morris, and Harold.

During the time Arthea and her children were living in Colorado, the children would spend summers with their grandparents in Lamoni and became friends with the children of a neighboring family. Through this friendship, Arthea became acquainted with Duane Stevenson and they were named on October 4, 1959.

Arthea became a very caring and loving mother to Duane's 12 children. From this union a son, Vernon Vey was born, bringing the total of their children to 17.

Arthea and Duane were faithful members of the RLDS Church. Arthea was ordained to the office of Teacher on September 4, 1988, at Bethany, Missouri, where they were active in the congregation.

Over the years, Arthea enjoyed doing embroidery work, and many of the children and grandchildren have quilts that she made for them.

Arthea was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Sharon Marie in infancy, and Alice Roberta Elliott, and grandson James Stevenson.

She is survived by her husband, Duane, and her children Danny Ballantyne, of Independence, Missouri, Crystal Leeann Coup and husband Alvin of Independence, Missouri, Morris Ballantyne of Tampa, Florida, Harold Ballantyne and wife Susan of Independence, Missouri, and Vernon Stevenson and wife, Monica soon-to-be of Darmstadt, Germany, her stepchildren Chuck Stevenson and wife Joyce of Grand Junction, Colorado, Lester Stevenson and wife Joyce of Lamoni, Iowa, Carl Stevenson and wife Janet of Independence, Missouri, Arlo Stevenson and wife Julie of Independence, Missouri, Linda Sams and husband Richard of Independence Missouri, Elmer Stevenson and wife Deana of Lamoni, Iowa, Janet Putt and husband Larry, of Dea Moines, Iowa, Ellen Shields and husband Roy of Maryville, Missouri, Leo Stevenson and wife Kathie of Chariton, Iowa, Bonnie Clubb and husband Dennis of Independence, Missouri, Cecil Stevenson and wife Marilyn of Chariton, Iowa, and Joseph Stevenson of Des Moines, Iowa, 46 grandchildren and 51 great-grandchildren, two brothers Clifford Cole and wife Lucille of Independence, Missouri, and Elbert Cole and wife Nancy of Monterey, California, and many other relatives and fnends.

Funeral services were held Friday, June 21, 2002, at 10 a.m. at the Lamoni Community of Christ Church in Lamoni, Iowa with Elders Roy Shields and JoEllen Decker officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Lamoni, Iowa. Arrangements were made through the Slade O'Donnell Funeral Home of Leon and Lamoni, Iowa. Memorials may be given to the Graceland University Library in memory of Arthea Cole Stevenson.
