Martha Laura Thorpe, daughter of Enoch and Fannie Larabee, was born July 21, 1860, at Edwardsburg, Ontario, Canada, and departed this life April 11, 1951, at the age of 90 years, nine months, and 11 days.

On April 13, 1889, she was married to George Thorpe at Blenheim, Ontario. To this union, four children were born Roy and Samuel who died in infancy, Joseph Henry who passed away 19 years ago, and Violet Thomas of Lamoni. After their marriage, they lived on a farm near Chatham, Ontario, for several years.

She was baptized into the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Oct. 31, 1893, at Blenheim, Ontario, by John H. Lake and was confirmed by John H. Lake and Samuel Brown.

They soon moved from the farm neat Chatham to Michigan and bought a farm 16 miles from Alpena. Eight years later they moved to western Canada but grew tired of the cold winters and moved back to their Michigan farm. They wanted to live nearer to the center place so they sold their farm and bought a small fruit farm at Andover, Mo., where they resided for a number of years. As they grew older they decided to move to Lamoni.

Her life was devoted to service that found expression in many deeds of kindness for all those with whom she came in contact. She was always ready to tell the Gospel story to her friends and neighbors and relatives. She had a pleasing soprano voice and helped with the singing in district conferences and church services.

She leaves to mourn her passing her husband, George Thorpe, one daughter, Mrs. J.H. Thomas of Lamoni; one sister, Mrs. Rachael Bennett of Windsor, Ontario, Canada; one sister-in-law, Isabelle Larabee, her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Edith Thorpe; 11 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
