Thursday, August 9, l9l7

LOUISA E. HAMILTON, daughter of WM. ALEXANDER and MALINDA HAMILTON, was born on the farm of her father, where Queen City, Schuyler Co., Mo. now stands, on May 26th, l854, and died in Davis City, Iowa on the morning of August 3, l9l7, aged 63 years, 2 months and 8 days.

The subject of this sketch moved with her parents from Schuyler County, Mo., to Blakesburg, in Wapello County, Iowa, and later about the fall of l865, to a farm about one mile northwest of Pleasanton, Iowa, where she grew to young womanhood, and attended the public school in Pleasanton.

On July 20th, l873, she was joined in holy wedlock to JAMES W. BURRELL, the late W.F. Craig performing the wedding ceremony at the home of the bride, in a log house that is still standing on the farm now owned by Bert Young, northwest of Pleasanton, and all of her married life lived near to and in Davis City, Iowa, where she peacefully passed away after a lingering illness of l3 weeks, caused by typhoid fever.

To the union of this couple eight children were born, namely: EVA GERTRUDE, who died when about l3 months old, ALFRED, of Hope, Idaho; ENOCH, GEO. CURTIS, of Davis City, MRS. DELLA SIMPSON, of Leon and ROXENA, KATE and NELLS, of Davis City, and all of the seven living, except ALFRED were at her bedside when she died. In addition to the 7 children she leaves nine grandchildren and two sisters and three brothers and her beloved husband, who has walked by her side for more than 44 years of married life. A brief sketch of his life might be of interest: "JEEMS" BURRELL as he is commonly and familiarly called, is one of the pioneers of Decatur County, born here about 68 years ago. His father, GEORGE BURRELL and four of his father's brothers settled in what is now the southeast corner of Burrell Township about l840 and after whom the township was named. "JEEMS" was born in the corner of the township, and his son, ENOCH, and three sons of ENOCH were all born on the same farm, the land being a tract that was entered by "JEEMS" grandmother. MR. BURRELL remembers when there were many more Indians here than there were whites and knows the hardships of the pioneer life.

MRS. LOUISA BURRELL was converted and joined the Missionary Baptist Church held in the Holden School House in Hamilton Township in l889 and was baptized by the Rev. Z. Thomas, and has retained her membership in the same class since, and during her last sickness she expressed a desire to stay with her family and to get well if it was the Lord's will, but if not she said she was prepared and ready to go to meet her Savior in peace. She requested her family to all try to be good to each other and their father, and desired them all to meet her in Heaven. She was a good true wife, a loving and affectionate mother and during all her long sickness and suffering she was patient and uncomplaining, and seemed to appreciate what was done for her, and all that kind and loving friends, and science could do, was done, but her work in this life was ended, and she was gone to her crowning to be forever with the Lord where she will await the coming of those she left behind her. Truly a good neighbor, a loving mother and a good woman has left us.

The funeral services were held at the Union Church in Davis City on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. conducted by Rev. Smith the Baptist Pastor from Humeston, his text was 2 Cor. 5 ch. and lst verse, and the theme of his subject was the "Life Hereafter", and that we shall know each other, and a very interesting, and instructive sermon was delivered to a very large congregation, in fact so large they could not all get in the church. Some nice hymns were rendered by a choir selected by the family of the deceased, with Mrs. Mabel Tharp presiding at the organ, after which the remains were laid to rest in the old cemetery at Davis City, there to await the summons to "Come forth" on the Resurrection morn. The relatives of the deceased have the sympathy of the entire community in their great affliction, and they take this opportunity to thank the neighbors and friends for their help and sympathy in this great bereavement.
