Obituary - Oliver Russell “Buster” Manchester
Oliver Russell Manchester, age 88, the son of Claude Wilford and Beulah Marie (Fetty) Manchester, was born November 1, 1931, at Davis City, Iowa and died at the Decatur County Hospital in Leon, Iowa on September 20, 2020.
Buster, as he was known, grew up in New Buda township of Decatur County, Iowa on the family farm. He went to Bonnett Country School then Lamoni High School. Following his formal education he started farming before joining the United States Army on March 5, 1953, serving until his honorable discharge on December 31, 1954. He came back home to Decatur County from Fort Carson, Colorado.
On December 4, 1957, Russell and Delores Jeanette Percell were united in marriage at her parents’ home in rural Lamoni, Iowa. They were blessed with three children, Barbara, Delores, and Curtis. Russell farmed and raised cattle while the children were young. He worked 27 years in the physical plant of Graceland College from 1970 until 1997. In his free time, he enjoyed playing any string instrument. He also was an animal lover and a baptized member of the Church of Christ.
Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Jeanette in 1995; parents-in-law, Earl and Pauline Percell; sister-in-law, Joyce Adams; and brother-in-law, Roger “Porky” Percell. Survivors include his three children, Barb and Mike Borrowman, Dee and Bob Reed, and Curtis Manchester and companion Bobby Reum, all of Davis City, Iowa; bonus daughter, Jo Kelly Harden of Phoenix, Arizona; five grandchildren, Mindi Woodson, Matt Green, Lindsey & Matt Williams, Russell Reed, and Radonda & Mark Gregg; 11 great grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 24, 2020, with Greg Sutherland presiding. Burial will be in the Davis City Cemetery, Davis City, Iowa.
