MARY ELIZABETH CHASTAIN was born in Putnam
County, Indiana, January
22nd, l836. Her parents, LEVI and LOUISA
(MARTIN) CHASTAIN were both
born in Bath County, Kentucky and were of
French Irish and Yankee
ancestry. After marriage they came first to
Indiana then to Decatur
County, Iowa, where especially to the older
settlers of Eden Township,
their history is well known. MISS MARY was
married to JOSEPH WALTON,
October lst, l868. Typhoid fever left her a
widow in less than five
weeks, and she has since remained unmarried.
JOSEPH WILLIS WALTON is
her only child, at his home she spent her
last days, there she "fell
asleep" and from there, just across the road
her body was carried to
mingle with the dust once more.

She was greatly respected for the Christian
character she developed and
her devotion grew with the years. Two
sisters and one brother preceded
her to the spirit land. JOHN only remains of
the family. I was glad to
be honored by the privilege of speaking at
the burial and to have Wm. J.
Campbell's assistance. The burial took place
September l9, her death
the day before.
