Decatur County Journal
Thursday, December l6, l9l5

The following concerning the death of S.J.
HURST, cousin of JAMES,
CHARLES and MISS MARGARET HURST, of Leon,
appeared in the Corydon
Democrat in the issue of December l6th:

Word was received in this city Tuesday of the
death of one of Corydon's
well known pioneer residents, S.J. HURST, who
died of pneumonia at his
home in Kansas City, Tuesday morning.

MR. HURST was the father of MRS. NELSON KING,
of this city, MRS. KING
having been called to his bedside several
days ago. MR. KING left for
Kansas City at once to attend the funeral
which was held in that city
yesterday afternoon.

MR. HURST was one of Corydon's pioneer
merchants having a large general
merchandise store on the south side of the
square from l870 to l885. He
left Corydon and moved back east entering the
wholesale shoe business
with his two brothers at Baltimore,
Maryland. After several years he
moved to Boston, Mass., for a short time,
then returned to Corydon,
establishing a produce business and has
carried it on successfully until
the present time.

He was about 86 years of age and the father
of nine children, all of
whom survive him. They are MRS. ANNA KING,
MISS NELLIE HURST, WM. B.,
SAM J., WALTER, EDWARD, RALPH, MRS. FLORENCE
MAJERS, MRS. LOUISE LEGG.
His wife has been dead for the past ten
years.

MR. HURST was one of the men who helped make
Corydon what it is today,
and the work he did here in the early days
has made his name a household
word in our county.
