Decatur County Journal
May 24, l894
DIED--At Van Wert, May l3, l894, CLARA SWARTZ, aged l2 years, l0 months
and 27 days. As the Leon schools took their noon recess on Tuesday of
last week, the line of pupils passed a funeral procession. Many did not
know the hearse was bearing the mortal remains of a late
schoolmate--CLARA SWARTZ. She attended the Leon Schools three years and
moved to Van Wert a few months ago. She was attacked with typhoid fever
and after a lingering sickness, succumbed to its destructive power. She
was a bright girl in her class and also in MRS. LAYTON's Sunday School
Class at the Presbyterian Church.
Devotions were held at the home by REV. SAMSON and in Leon at the
Church, where REV. GURLEY spoke briefly on Ecc. l2:l. The interment
took place in Leon Cemetery, schoolmates from Van Wert serving as pall
bearers. The lesson of the test as applied to the occasion is youthful
piety and so fitted for longer days spent in good or for early death and
entrance among the blessed.
