Decatur County Journal
October 6, l892
CHAS. SULLIVAN, only son of W.J. and HATTIE SULLIVAN, was born in Leon
October 20, l879, and died at the home of his parents in Leon last
Saturday morning, October l, l892, aged l9 years, ll months and ll days.
CHARLIE made a long, brave struggle with disease for eight weeks, being
cheerful, patient, hopeful and uncomplaining through all his illness.
From his early boyhood he was always busy at something, so that by
industry and husbanding the littles that a boy could earn, he was
enabled to begin business with his father April 7, l89l, at the age of
nineteen, with several hundreds of dollars. At school he was
universally loved by his teachers and classmates, enjoying their fullest
confidence and respect. His genial and pleasant nature easily won to
him many friends. He excelled in physical strength and was an
acknowledged leader in those games in which boys of his age so much
delight. His conduct to his parents was most exemplary. He counseled
with them. His mother was his confidant. He invariably obeyed her and
asked her advice in all his desired undertakings. One thing was
especially noticeable, that he was never on the streets after night in
his boyhood, unless on business or attended by his parents. Home to him
was the dearest spot upon earth.
He was a regular attendant of the Leon M.E. Sabbath School and had the
confidence of all his teachers and classmates, who evinced their regard
and respect for his memory by following his body to the grave and
strewing flowers over his last resting place.
The funeral services were conducted by the pastor at the M.E. Church
Sabbath afternoon at 3:30, when a large concourse of people testified by
their presence their sorrow for the departed and their sympathy for the
bereaved parents. There are many things we cannot understand, but we
believe God "in all his wisdom doeth all things well".
