Decatur County Journal
November 30, l899

The death of MRS. MARY VOWELL occurred quite suddenly last Sunday morning, Nov. 26, l899, at the residence of her son, W.F. TEW, at 8l5 Lyon Street, Des Moines. While she has been an invalid for the past four years, her condition was not considered critical at any time until Sunday morning, about six o'clock, when in attempting to rise she fell back on her bed and passed peacefully and quietly away.

MRS. VOWELL was born in Connecticut, February 25, l828, and became the wife of E.G. TEW in l848. They removed to Ohio where they resided for a number of years. After the death of her husband, MRS. VOWELL came to Garden Grove in l865 and afterward resided in Bloomfield. In l869 she located in Leon where she resided until l895, when she moved to Des Moines with her son. She was married three times.

The deceased is survived by her two sons, W.L. and FRANK and her grandson DAN. W.L. TEW resides in Oklahoma and FRANK is employed in the Kenyon Printing Establishment at Des Moines. He learned the printing trade in the JOURNAL office and held the position of foreman for many years. DAN TEW also learned his trade in this office and is now employed on the Des Moines Daily Capital. To these relatives the heartfelt sympathy of many friends is extended.

MRS. VOWELL became a member of the Presbyterian Church in Leon about eighteen years ago and lived a consistent Christian life. She was a woman of more than ordinary ability, quiet and somewhat reserved, but a kind neighbor whose influence was wholly for the right. Her highest eulogy is her life and work; her best memorial the usefulness of her life to those who came within its circle.

Interment occurred at Garden Grove Cemetery Monday afternoon, a brief service having been conducted by Rev. J.Q. Hall, Pastor of the Presbyterian Church.
