Decatur County Journal
Leon, Decatur County, Iowa
November 17, 1892
DANIEL STEARNS was born in Jefferson County, New York, April 12, 1828, and died at his home in Garden Grove, November 8, 1892.
He moved with his parents to Seneca County, Ohio, in 1829.
His father
died in 1831 and his mother in 1839. He was raised and lived upon a farm until 1852, when he and two brothers, JOHN and A.B. made a trip to California, where he engaged in mining for nearly two years before returning to his home in Ohio. He only remained in Ohio a few months, when he and his brother, A.B., came to Garden Grove in l854, where he
has resided ever since.
In the same year, his brother bought of G.W. PIPER, who was selling goods in Garden Grove, his stock of goods, store, dwelling and twenty acres of land, in which he afterwards became an equal partner and the firm of D. & A.B. STEARNS has done business on the same ground ever since, until last February, when they sold out their entire stock. They continued in the banking and farming business up to the time of his death.
He was married to MISS LOUISE SIMMONS in November, 1861. As a result of the marriage, three children were born; two daughters and one son, of which his wife and son survive him.
DAN STEARNS was the friend of everybody; rich and poor alike counselled with him, and he was always kind and obliging, ready to give a helping hand to those in need. But anything we could say would not do justice to the life of such a man as this. His life is an open book to all who knew him.
A large concourse of friends attended the funeral obsequies to pay a last loving tribute to the one whom they all loved. All the banks of the Decatur County Banking Association were closed on the day of the funeral and the employees were in attendance.
[Interment was made at Garden Grove Cemetery.]

NOTE: This would be Mary Louisa SIMMONS born 11 May 1837 in New York City, the daughter of Henry SIMMONS and Louisa BLOODGOOD. Dan and Mary Louisa married on 28 Nov 1861. She also died in 1892, according to _The Settlers of Garden Grove_ by Karla Gunzenhauser, 1994. [February 14, 1907, according to her gravestone.] They are buried in the west side of the Garden Grove cemetery.
Interestingly, the SIMMONS family was in Seneca Co, Ohio from 1856 to 1858, when they moved to Garden Grove.
I am still searching for the parents of the above Henry SIMMONS.
Regards,
Howard
