Decatur County Journal
Thursday, March 7, l9l8

GEORGE WADSWORTH SEARS, son of DANIEL and
MARY W. SEARS, was born in
Center Township, Decatur County, Iowa,
September 29, l864, and died at
the home of his son, H.R. SEARS, in West
Helena, Ark. February 27, l9l8,
aged 53 years, four months and 28 days.

He was united in marriage to MISS MARY
ELIZABETH FUNK, at Leon on
December l, l887, and to this union were born
two children, H.R. SEARS,
of West Helena, Ark., and MRS. A.F. SCOTT, of
near Leon.

MR. SEARS had spent his entire life in
Decatur County, residing on a
farm just northeast of Leon until l896, when
he was elected county
auditor, and moved his family to Leon, where
he has since made his
home. He served as county auditor for four
years, and was in charge of
the electric light plant for many years.

Quiet and unassuming, he was a man of strict
integrity, the friend of
everyone, and in his death the community has
sustained a great loss. He
was a kind and affectionate husband, and a
devoted father, ready to make
any sacrifice for his family. He had been in
failing health for several
years, but continued to work until about one
year ago, when his physical
condition compelled him to retire from active
life.

Last spring, on account of his health he went
to the home of his son at
West Helena, where for a time he seemed to be
gaining strength, but his
disease baffled all medical skill, and he
passed quietly away on the
morning of February 27th. The remains were
brought to Leon Friday,
March lst, and the funeral was held Sunday,
March 3, the services being
in charge of the Masonic Lodge, of which
deceased was a member. Rev.
W.M. Brooks, Pastor of the M.E. Church
delivered the funeral sermon.
Interment followed at the Dunkard Cemetery
near Leon.
