OBITUARY - EDWARD JOHN.
Decatur County Journal
June 23, l898
EDWARD JOHN died at his home in Franklin Township, last Thursday, in the
59th year of his life, after a lingering illness.
The subject of this sketch was born in Monroe County, Ohio, August l9,
l839. In November, l866, he was joined in marriage to MISS NANCY
BECKHAM. To them were born two sons, both of whom are married and
settled near the paternal home. MR. JOHN was converted and joined the
M.E. Church in l868, and lived an exemplary member of that order until
his death.
In l86l he enlisted in the army, but was discharged after about one
year's service, on account of illness. After recovering his health he
helped organize a company, and was elected first lieutenant, and served
until the end of the war. He was taken prisoner and held in prison for
about eight months. At one time he escaped and was hunted down with
bloodhounds, but was finally exchanged. He moved to Iowa and settled in
Decatur County in l880. He opened up a new farm, and by industry and
economy made a model home. MR. JOHN was a good and useful citizen, a
good neighbor, a kind husband and father. A short time before he died
he expressed himself as reconciled and ready to die.
The funeral services were held at the Fairview Church, conducted by REV.
S. SAMSON, assisted by REV. ELIJAH TILLOTSON, and the remains were laid
to rest in the Leon Cemetery.
