OBITUARY - MARY SYMONS IRONSIDES.

Decatur County Journal

April 8, l897

Died, at her home, four miles northwest of Leon, on Sunday night, April

4, l897, MRS. MARY SYMONS IRONSIDES, aged forty-two years, one month and

twenty-seven days.

MRS. IRONSIDES was born at Glenn of North, Scotland, February 7, l855.

She was married December l4, l877, and with MR. IRONSIDES, in l880, came

to the United States. They lived in Louisa County, Iowa, a short time,

and after that in Ringgold County. They came to Decatur County fourteen

years ago. On Sabbath evening MRS. IRONSIDES retired in her usual

health. About midnight she awoke with a difficulty in breathing and on

arising, expired in a few minutes. The husband was overwhelmed and

immediately started out to inform his neighbors of his overwhelming

calamity. Medical aid was summoned but life was extinct.

MRS. IRONSIDES was very justly held in high esteem by a numerous circle

of acquaintances. As a housewife and helpmate, she was the

impersonation of the virtuous woman of Proverbs 3l. Cheerful, kind,

industrious, upright, she was the light of home. But her chief merit

was her being a Christian. She accepted and professed Christ in her

maiden days and adhered to that profession unto the end. She and her

husband were Scotch Presbyterians, and in the United States were

American Presbyterians, holding their membership in Leon. Without any

warning, death came knocking at the door in the lone, midnight hour and

in a few moments she was in the Spirit Land. We have no reason to fear

the sudden call found her unprepared. But upon husband and three

daughters the dispensation fell with stunning force, as indeed upon the

community. The light of home is extinguished, in the family circle is

an irreparable void.

The years will come and go, but her husband will carry memory of a great

loss and long

"For the touch of a vanished hand;

The sound of a voice that is still."

The household have the unfeigned sympathy of the congregation and

community. May they so live that death for them may reunite these

severed ties. The funeral service was conducted Tuesday at ll o'clock

at the home of the deceased and the remains interred in the Leon

Cemetery.
