Decatur County Journal
Thursday, July 22, l9l5

JOHN P. KLINE was born in Lebanon, Hunterdon
County, New Jersey, August
3rd, l837, and departed this life July llth,
l9l5, at his home in
Weldon, Iowa. His age at the time of his
death was 77 years, ll months
and 8 days.

His mother died when he was 4 years of age
and he was cared for in the
home of his uncle, JONATHAN DAVIS, until his
father married the second
time. After the father was married he then
had the loving care of a
mother again.

In l856 his father moved to Fulton County,
Illinois. He remained in his
father's home until he was twenty-one years
of age. For the next few
years he traveled in and around the states
between Illinois and New
Jersey.

In l867 he came to Decatur County, Iowa, and
purchased for himself the
east half section of land that he now owns
and 200 acres lying across
the road, direct east of it, at five dollars
per acre. Soon
after this purchase, he sold the east 200
acres at an advance of five
dollars per acre. This being considered a
good business deal at the
time. In the spring of l869 he made the
drive with wagon and team from
Ellisville, Ill, arriving on the new land
March l7th.
The land was all raw prairie at this time.
He went to work immediately
building fences and making other improvements
on it. As time passed by,
he purchased the half section of land west of
his home place. He saw
his land change from raw prairie to improved
farm land; lived through
the excitement of a new railroad being built
along the north side of his
farm and having a town spring upon it in
l880.

May 6, l874, he was united in marriage to
MISS EMMA BOEGER, of New Buda,
Iowa, and to this union were born four
children, namely: ANNA, CARL M.,
GERDA and NEVA KLINE WESTFALL.

MR. KLINE was reared in a Christian home.
His parents had him
christened in early infancy. When the town
of Weldon was laid out on
the corner of his farm he was immediately
interested in the erection of
the Methodist Church as he wished his
children to have advantages of
church and Sunday School life. At this time
he made a financial promise
for the regular support of the church. This
promise he faithfully kept.

Beside his immediate family, MR. KLINE leaves
to mourn his loss, nine
grandchildren, two brothers and six sisters.
His brother, C.G. KLINE,
of Ft. Madison, two sisters, MRS. TEACH, of
Avon, Ill.; MRS. J.C. WILSON
and husband, of Mt. Pleasant, his nephew and
wife, MR. and MRS. MOORE,
of Shenandoah, MRS. KLINE's brother, MR.
BOEGER and daughter, of Davis
City, are the relatives from away that were
present at the funeral
service, which was conducted from the
Methodist Church, Wednesday
morning, by Rev. J.A.E. Cunningham, the
Pastor, assisted by Rev. Geo.
Mitchell an old acquaintance and friend.
Interment was made in Green
Bay Cemetery.
