Leon Journal-Reporter
Leon, Decatur County, Iowa

Hyla Leona Hill, age 88, of Leon, Iowa, the daughter of Otto Will and Louise Frances (Craig) Hill, was born December 7, 1929, in their home in Pleasanton, Iowa. She departed this life on Tuesday, January 23, 2018, at Westview Acres in Leon, Iowa, to be with her Lord and her loved ones in Heaven.

She lived all her life in Decatur County, Iowa, with the exception of two years when her family moved to a farm in Mercer County, Missouri. She attended country school near Pleasanton and finished the eighth grade in Missouri. She then moved with her family to a farm south of Leon, Iowa where she remained until 1964, when due to failing health of her father, they moved into Leon.

She was employed as a waitress in a café, and later as a clerk in the Ben Franklin Store in Leon, at which time her father became bedfast and she stayed home to help her mother care for him. Later, she cared for her mother and grandfather in their home for 16 years.

She loved children and enjoyed her niece and nephews and cousins very much. She also did babysitting in her home for several years and was blessed so much by them and their families. They remained a dear and special blessing over the years.

Hyla accepted Christ as her Savior and made public profession of her faith, along with her parents in their home, on March 7, 1968, a decision she never regretted. It brought her peace of mind, strength, and comfort through many trials over the years. As a child she attended Sunday school and Church at Providence Church in Iowa and Bethel Church in Missouri. She was baptized, along with her parents, in 1968, and became early members of Calvary Baptist Church in Leon, where she enjoyed serving as long as her health permitted. She loved to sing and continued to spend many hours in prayer. She felt so blessed to be a member of such a loving and caring church family. One of her favorite scriptures was John 11:25-26, Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the Life, he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live, and whosever liveth and believeth in me, shall never die.”

Hyla was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; brother, Roy Hill; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Clella Hill, of Leon; niece, Kristin Hill of Leon; three nephews, Keith Hill of Osceola, Iowa, Kenneth Hill of Portland, Oregon, Kevin Hill and wife, Melody, of Wayne, Nebraska; great nieces and nephews, Jerome & Leslie Hill, Jesse & Tabetha Hill, Tracy Sprague, Jamie Netherton, and Molly Hill; great, great nieces and nephews; several cousins; and many friends. Plus, her church family and the love they shared with her.

Funeral services will be held at Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa at 10 a.m. Friday, January 26, 2018, Pastor Dale Short officiating. Burial will be in the Hamilton Cemetery, near Pleasanton, Iowa.

Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
