Ebenezer Allen was born January 28, 1839, at Mansfield, Conn., and departed this life July 4, 1923, aged 84 years, 5 months and 6 days. He moved to Hanover, Conn., when a child and was converted and joined the Presbyterian Church at the age of 14 years. He moved to Warren, Illinois, the next year and united with the M.E. Church, and remained at Warren until the breaking out of the Civil War then enlisted in Co. E. 15 Ill. Inf., September 5, 1861, serving until the close of the war.

He was married to Mary Ware, April 10, 1864, at Warren, Ill. To this union were born five children, 2 boys and 3 girls, the two boys Elmer, of Sabetha, Kansas and Charles, of Oneida, Kansas, are still living.

Mr. Allen came to Decatur County, Iowa, March, 1867, and settled near Davis City, after a few years moved to Lamoni, Iowa, where his wife died November 12, 1880. He was married to Phila Marshall January 8, 1882. To this union were born six children, five boys and one girl: Morris Allen, of Ellendale, Minnesota; Grant Allen, of Parks, Nebraska; Rev. Russell Allen, Pastor of the Christian Church of Bayard, Iowa; Roy Allen, of Decatur, Iowa; Mrs. Ruby Black, of Decatur, Iowa; Miles Allen, of West Tulsa, Oklahoma. The children were all present at the funeral except the son, Grant, of Parks, Neb.

Brother Allen was at Sunday School the first of July, but Sunday night was taken ill at the supper table and while everything that the family and physicians could do was done, he peacefully passed away Wednesday morning at one o'clock. Brother Allen has lived in Decatur since 1890; he has lived a worthy, sincere Christian life, always at church and Sunday School unless unable to attend, was one of the sweet singers of the church, using the voice God had given him up to the last Sunday of his life. It has been said that he sang at every funeral in Decatur for 20 years, and his requst was, that everybody sing at his funeral; this request was made not two weeks ago, in conversation with his pastor. The passing of Bro. Allen is a great loss to the church and community, we shall miss him for his seat will be vacant, we shall miss his sweet tenor voice, we shall miss his influence for good in the town, but we thank God for his life and say "The Lord giveth, and the Lord taketh away, Blessed be the name of the Lord." Bro Allen was a member of the G.A.R. Post and the last resident member.

The casket was carried by members of the American Legion, who formed a Guard of Honor, and with the flag which Bro. Allen loved so well in the lead, marched to the beautiful Decatur Cemetery where the body was tenderly laid to rest. The flowers were many and very beautiful, the grave being completely covered. The services were conducted at the M.E. Church by the Pastor, Rev. Mrs. E.A. Porter. The music was furnished as Bro. Allen had requested by everybody singing.
