JOHN W. MCDOWELL was born in Shelby County,
Indiana, May 22, l847, and
departed this life at his home near Terre
Haute, March l7, l9l5, at the
age of sixty-seven years and ten months.

When but three weeks old he came to Missouri
with his parents, later
moving to Iowa where he resided until his
death. When a young man he
was employed after the civil war as a
freighter, hauling supplies across
the plains to the frontier posts during the
Indian wars. Afterward he
took up the occupation of farming which he
had since followed. MR.
MCDOWELL was of the Adventist Faith and was
baptized in that church near
Caledonia, Ringgold County, at the age of
thirty-one years. February
l7, l866, he was married to MISS ORRENA
PITMAN. Ten children were born
to this union, all of whom were present at
the funeral with the
exception of CHARLES S., who preceded his
father to the other world in
l9l3. The youngest of the family, IRL D.,
was with his father at the
time of his death.
They had been partners in the farming
business for the past three years.

MR. MCDOWELL was prominent in the affairs of
his community and of the
county, a firm believer in right and justice,
beloved by all who knew
him. He was a loyal friend and a kind and
loving husband and father.
He will be sadly missed from the home circle
and from the community
where he was so well known and so highly
respected.

He leaves a wife and nine children, EDWARD
