Decatur County Journal
Thursday, April 22, l9l5

JAMES HENRY FARRIS was born January l6th,
l845 at Taylorsville,
Muskingum County, Ohio, and died April 7,
l9l5, at the home of his
daughter, MRS. THOS. SUTHERLIN, with whom he
had made his home for many
years, being 70 years, 3 months and 22 days
of age.

He was the son of JORDAN and MARY ANN FARRIS,
who moved to Keokuk
County, Iowa, when JAMES was yet a small lad.
Later they removed to
Decatur County, where he was united in
marriage to LUCINDA MILLER, June
6, l863. To this union were born, MARTHA E.
and JENNIE D., both of whom
are living. Besides these children, MR.
FARRIS leaves to mourn his
departure two brothers, JOSEPH T., of Keokuk,
Iowa, and GEO. W., of
Oakland, Cal., and two grandchildren.

When the Civil War broke out he answered his
country's call, by
enlisting as an infantryman, but owing to his
youth was sent home. June
30th, he again enlisted in Co. C, 9th
Cavalry, and was mustered out
February 28, l866, at Little Rock, Arkansas.
Since that time he had
been actively engaged in the implement
business until about two years
ago, when failing health necessitated his
retirement.

For the last five months his suffering was
intense, yet he bore it
without complaint and was at all times
patient, thoughtful and
rational. Funeral services were held at the
home of THOS. SUTHERLIN,
Rev. E.F. Partridge officiating, on Friday at
4 p.m.
Interment took place at the Odd Fellows
Cemetery. The local G.A.R.
attended in a body, acting as pall bearers
and conducted the burial
services according to their ritual.
