James Edgar Young, age 69, of Lamoni, Iowa, the son of John Hammond and Ramona Pearl (Sheppard) Young, was born July 1, 1948, at Golden, Colorado. He passed away following a motor vehicle accident north of Lamoni, Iowa on Saturday, July 8, 2017.

Jim grew up in Golden, Colorado and graduated from high school in 1966. He then entered the United States Air Force and served from 1967 until 1971.

Following his honorable discharge he went to Graceland College for a year. While in school, he saw that Lamoni lacked in garbage pick up options. So, he and a friend started a garbage route service with a 1949 pickup with sideboards, a scoop shovel, and a freight dolly on December 1, 1972. He operated the business, Recirculating Consultants, Inc. (DBA Jim’s Trash Service) for 44 years, retiring on October 1, 2016. In 2017, he was named Lamoni Citizen of the Year.

Jim was married and blessed with daughter, Sarah. After his first marriage ended, Jim was given full custody of Sarah. While working, Jim met Debra Ann Goold, who was working at the Lamoni Sale Barn Cafe. They were married on November 5, 1977, in Lamoni. Debbie became mother to Sarah. They were also blessed with two more daughters, Abriel and Jamie.

In his free time, Jim loved to tinker with engines, weld, invent, and build things. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, camping, gardening, and landscaping. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Lamoni. He was a loving and generous dad and grandpa with a servant’s heart.

Preceding him in death were his parents; and brother, David Young.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 40 years, Debbie Young, of Lamoni; daughters, Sarah Cullen and husband, Shawn, of Champaign, Illinois, Abriel Dixon and husband, Matt, of Waverly, Iowa, and Jamie Cullen and husband, Michael, of Bettendorf, Iowa; six grandchildren, Ethan, Aubrey, Kaitlyn, Savannah, Lexi, and Maddie; sisters, Zinda Coplen and husband, Doug, of Bailey, Colorado and Lissa Young of Nayarit, Mexico; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and many friends.

Memorial services will be held at the Community of Christ in Lamoni, Iowa at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 13, 2017. Visitation is at the Community of Christ Church on Wednesday, 6-8 p.m. [Interment was made at Rose Hill Cemetery, Lamoni, Iowa.] Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
