Athel married James Reed McIntosh on May 25, 1947 at Pleasanton Methodist Church, Pleasanton, Iowa and to this union seven children were born.

She was saved in 1956 at Zion Baptist Church, Decaturville, Missouri, and was baptized July 30, 1960 at McGraw Ford, of James River near Springfield, Missouri. She united with Dale Street Baptist, and later Springhill Baptist Church in Willard, Missouri.
