Mary Jean Heintz, age 88, formerly of Decatur County, Iowa, died at Bethany Life in Story City, Iowa on August 3, 2017. She was born September 27, 1928, in Story County, Iowa to Arthur L. and Gladys Roseanne (Cook) Couser.

Mary Jean grew up in Story County, Iowa. She attended school and graduated from high school at Fernald, Iowa. As a teenager she was her church pianist, in 4-H, and played in the band and in basketball during high school. After graduation, she attended Deacon Evangelical Nursing School in Marshalltown, Iowa and became a registered nurse. She started out working at Iowa State University Hospital in Ames, Iowa.

On November 24, 1949, she was married to John Edward Heintz in Ames, Iowa. As John completed his college education, Mary Jean worked at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames. They lived in Ames until John graduated in 1950. Then they lived in rural Nevada and Colo, Iowa before moving to Indiana. In 1968, the family moved to rural Decatur County, Iowa. Mary Jean worked at Decatur County Public Health for four or five years. Over the course of ten years, John and Mary Jean were blessed with eight children, Marty, Susan, Kurt, Randy, Donna, Bill, Scott, and Kevin. Mary Jean and John had retired and were living in Decatur, Iowa at the time of John’s death on March 6, 1993.

Most important to Mary Jean was her faith and family. She was a member of St. Brendan’s Catholic Church in Leon and St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Grand River, Iowa. She was active in PEO for many years. She enjoyed her flowers and loved attending many of her grandchildren’s activities.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, John Heintz; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Thelma Crouser; and two great grandsons, Thomas Keith Heintz and Francis Scott Heintz.

Survivors include her children, Marty and Karen Heintz of Pipestone, Minnesota, Sue and Jon Dooley of Nevada, Iowa, Kurt and Jodi Heintz of Mt. Pleasant, Texas, Randy and Laurie Heintz of Ft. Myers, Florida, Donna and Pat Patterson of Yates Center, Kansas, Bill and Tammy Heintz of Lamoni, Iowa, Scott and Kathy Heintz of Cuba, Missouri, and Kevin Heintz and companion, Cathy, of Ankeny, Iowa; 25 grandchildren; 39 great grandchildren; brother, Ray Couser and wife, Marlene, of Salem, Oregon; numerous nieces and nephews; and other relatives and many friends.

A funeral mass will be held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Grand River, Iowa at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 8, 2017. Burial will be in the Leon Cemetery, Leon, Iowa. A rosary will be held at the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa on Monday, August 7, at 6 p.m. with family receiving friends 6:30-8 p.m.

Slade-O'Donnel Funeral Home of Leon was in charge of arrangements.
