Obituary ~ Marjorie Jane (Graham) Trembly
April 18, 1913 ~ June 04, 2017

Leon Journal-Reporter
Leon, Decatur County, Iowa

Marjorie Jane Trembly was born April 18, 1913, four miles southeast of Davis City, Iowa, at the home of her parents, George Franklin and Maude Catherine (Skales) Graham. She passed peacefully from this life on June 4, 2017, at Westview Care Center in Leon, Iowa, at the age of 104.

She attended Scott Country School through 6th grade, which was just up the hill from where her family lived, then rode a horse to Davis City for 7th & 8th grades and the early part of high school. Her education was interrupted when her mother became very ill, and Marjorie stayed home to care for her younger siblings. She started school the next year in Leon, staying with a family and working for her room and board, and graduated with the Class of 1933. Her favorite classes were Home Ec, English, Typing and Chorus.

She did housework for $3/week, later moving to Des Moines where she worked at Bishop's Cafeteria, and then, felt fortunate to get a housekeeper/nanny position with a prominent family making $8/week over the next four years. She shared her meager earnings with her family as times were very hard on the farm, buying her folks their first radio and a set of dishes.

On one of her trips back home, she ran into a former classmate, Ivan Trembly, at a dance in Decatur. Through their long-distance courtship of writing letters back and forth and the occasional trip to Des Moines with Ivan's "cool" car, they were married December 29, 1940, at the Brethren Parsonage in Leon on a Sunday afternoon. Together they would build a life on what later would become a Century Farm, and they were married for 76 years. To this union, two children were born: Robert Bevan in 1943 and Janet Sue in 1953.

Marjorie enjoyed being a homemaker and mother. She collected recipes and was a wonderful cook. Sometimes it was hard to find a piece of paper in the house that didn't have some ingredients or measurements written on it, and for many years, she would listen to KMA's radio program while working in the kitchen. This was her connection to other farm wives sharing ideas and more new recipes to try. She was a member of the neighborhood Jolly Homemakers Women's Club, and in later years, the Priscilla Club, Young Married Farm Bureau Club, a 4-H leader for Morgan Teamworkers, and served on the Extension Council from 1973-76. She also helped with the cancer fundraising drive for many years.

Growing up, her family attended Riverview Country Church where she made a profession of faith and was baptized in August 1928 at the age of 15. Her membership was transferred in 1957 to New Salem Baptist Church where she served as Sunday School and VBS teacher, was a member of the Women's Missionary Circle, and enjoyed Christian fellowship with her church family. She loved music and enjoyed playing hymns on the piano where she had many memorized by heart.

She had beautiful gardens and loved flowers. Traditions were important to her, and she took pleasure in decorating for holidays, family celebrations, and taking pictures to remember the occasions. Her favorite card game was Rook, and she seemed to know where to sit at the table to be able to land the Bird. She would always look forward to hearing the latest news about her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and just the mention of their names would bring a smile to her face. She also loved to give gifts and never wanted to be without something that she could give someone if they stopped by.

Preceding Marjorie in death were her parents; husband, Ivan; brothers Willard, Milford and Richard; half-sisters Merna Paulson and Veta Cloe.

Cherishing her memory are her son, Robert, of Lineville; her daughter, Janet, and husband, Raymond Leeper, of Mt. Vernon, Iowa; grandsons, B.J. (Jodi) Leeper of Olathe, Kansas; Tyler (Jamie) Leeper of Minneapolis, MN; Kaleb (Gymel) Trembly of Davis, CA; and granddaughter, Naomi Wyldflower of Mendocino, CA; great-grandchildren, Latham, Emery, Graham, Niko, and Daxon Leeper.

Memorial services were conducted at New Salem Baptist Church, Leon, Iowa at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 8, 2017. Interment was made at New Salem Cemetery, Leon, Iowa.

Slade - O'Donnell Funeral Home of Leon and Lamoni handled arrangements.
