Obituary ~ Cheryl Joyce (Willis) Davis
November 06, 1947 ~ April 30, 2017

Leon Journal-Reporter
Leon, Decatur County, Iowa

Cheryl Joyce Davis, age 69, of Chariton, Iowa, was born in the Decatur County Hospital in Leon, Iowa, on November 6, 1947, to Wiley W. and Virginia E. (Latta) Willis and passed away at the Lucas County Health Center in Chariton, Iowa on Sunday, April 30, 2017.

She was the second child and only daughter of Wiley and Virginia. She has two brothers, Larry and Steve.

Cheryl was two years old when the family moved to Leon, Iowa. She attended school and graduated from Central Decatur High School in 1965. She then moved to Des Moines, Iowa to attend Americana Academy of Beauty, graduating in 1966. She passed the Iowa State Cosmetology exam in 1967. While attending beauty school, Cheryl met James Allan Davis. They were married in September of 1966, and made their home in Des Moines. To this union two children were born, Jinel Elaine and James Allan, II. Cheryl worked for Margaret’s Beauty Salon until 1970. Cheryl and Jim were divorced in 1977.

In August of 1977, Cheryl went to work at Principal Financial Group, then known as Bankers Life. She worked there until 1990, when her health forced her to quit working. In 1978, Cheryl and her two children moved to Norwalk, Iowa and in late 1979, they moved to Leon so she could help her mother care for her father, until his death in January 1993. She then cared for her mother until her death in July of 1995. In February of 1996, Cheryl moved to Chariton, to be closer to her daughter, son-in-law, and three grandsons. Her son moved to Chariton in 1997, to help his mom and be near the rest of the family.

Cheryl’s children and grandchildren were the love of her life. She loved to have the grandkids come and stay with her. She always said, “Grandchildren are a parent’s revenge.” She claimed to spoil them rotten.

Cheryl made a commitment of faith and accepted Christ as her Savior when she was 20. While living in Des Moines she belonged to Open Bible Temple. After moving to Leon she was a member of Bethel First Baptist Church and upon moving to Chariton she transferred her membership to the Chariton Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). She was always a very active member in her church.

She loved to sing and sang in the church choir, was song leader, sang at community affairs, and jam sessions. She also loved to do crafts of all kinds and loved to teach her grandsons how to do crafts. She enjoyed the time spent with her family and friends.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Wiley and Virginia Willis.

Survivors include her children, Jinel and Joe Morris of Algona, Iowa and James and Mary Davis of Newton, Iowa; grandchildren, Zaccaria Combs of St. Benedict, Iowa, Elijah Combs of Moline, Illinois, Gabriel Combs of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Elycia Davis, Isaiah Davis, and Noah Davis, all three of Newton, Iowa, and Samantha White of Norwalk, Iowa; four great grandchildren, Zarriah, Gracelynn, Lex, and Behr; brothers, Larry and Mai Willis of Columbia, South Carolina and Steve and Marla Willis of Leon; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and many, many friends.
