Obituary ~ Jean Marie (Ballantyne) Colyer

Lamoni, Decatur County, Iowa

Jean Marie Colyer, age 76, of Urbandale, Iowa, the second child and daughter of Robert Marion and Neva Juanita (Snethen) Ballantyne, was born on Liberty Home Farm at Lamoni, Iowa on July 31, 1940. She passed away on March 22, 2017, at the Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa due to complications of pancreatic cancer.

While Jean was still a baby, her family moved to Harrison County, Missouri. She attended country school there and also in Blythedale and Eagleville, Missouri. She graduated from North Harrison High School in Eagleville in 1959. She then attended one semester at Graceland College before transferring to a business school in the Kansas City, Missouri area. She remained in Kansas City and worked for a creamery for several years before marriage.

Jean was married to her husband, of close to 55 years, John Edward Colyer, also known as Ed, Eddie, and John Edward, on April 7, 1962, at the Lamoni RLDS Church. They were blessed with two daughters, Michele Lou on January 13, 1964, and Mindy Rae on December 12, 1979.

Her great love of music found her sitting at her piano playing her favorite songs, mostly hymns. Her favorite to play and sing, over and over again, “Trees” is being played as a tribute to her at her funeral. She was baptized in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Church at eight years of age, in a water tank set up in the Lamoni Coliseum before the current church building was completed. She was currently a member of the Decatur Restoration Branch. She faithfully attended when she could.

Jean loved her family, especially the young children and babies. She elected not to take chemo treatments for her end stage cancer because she wanted to enjoy the newest two babies in her family, great grandson, Michael Grant McHenry, and granddaughter, Kayla Michele Summers. Although very ill, she rallied for those grandchildren the weekend prior to her death as she interacted with them.

Preceding her in death were her parents; oldest daughter, Michele Black, and brother-in-law, Bill Wilcoxson.

Survivors include her husband, Ed Colyer of Urbandale, Iowa; daughter, Mindy and Steve Summers of Fort Dodge, Iowa; grandchildren, Seth & Amanda Black, Matthew & Christina Black, Alannah & Caleb McHenry, Kaitlyn Summers, Collin Summers, Conner Summers, and Kayla Summers; great grandson, Michael McHenry; siblings, Kathleen Wilcoxson of Eagleville, Missouri, Mark and DeAnna Ballantyne of Kimberling City, Missouri, Gary Ballantyne of Lamoni, and Sara Ballantyne of Leon, Iowa; her 88 year old aunt and uncle, Rachel & Glenn Trullinger of Eagleville, Missouri; as well as cousins and other relatives who carry the last name of Snethen, Boswell, Ballantyne, and Wilson.

But, that is not all her survivors. Through the course of the past 10-12 years the family grew from biological families to adopted families. We would be remiss if we did not list these names as grandchildren, Melanie Carter and daughters, Amanda & David Goddard and their children, Hadlee and Carter, Kaiti Clemence, and Rachel and Joe Miller and their children, Alivia, Dean, and Phillip; Andrew and Kim Clemence and their children, Jacob, Logan, and Bruce; and Leslie Ann Guyer. Also grandchildren, Callie Love Morehouse and her children, Hannah, Emma, and Grayce Wells; and Caleb Keller.

Jean will be greatly missed. She is already missed. Oh my!!! What will we do without her?

Memorial services will be held at the Lamoni Community of Christ Church in Lamoni, Iowa at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 27, 2017, with Elders Jon Barney and Brad Carr officiating. Arrangements were through the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home of Leon and Lamoni, Iowa. A memorial fund has been established by the Family. [Interment was made at Rose Hill Cemetery, Lamoni, Iowa.]
