Obituary – Leo Eugene McConnell
Leo Eugene McConnell, age 93, of Grand River, Iowa, the son of Lert and Nancy Kathering “Nan” (Hanner) McConnell, was born September 18, 1923. He died at the Clarke County Hospital in Osceola, Iowa on June 10, 2017.
Leo grew up in Grand River and graduated from Grand River High School in 1941. Leo moved to Des Moines, Iowa and worked for Hawkeye Security Insurance Company for 12 years.
Leo and some friends visited California, and Leo decided to move to Los Angeles. He lived in the L.A. area for 33 years, with 22 years of that time spent in Hollywood. Leo worked in Universal Studios in the still photography department. He met many stars while working in the studio photography, including Judy Garland.
In 1984, Leo retired back to Grand River. He enjoyed being near his sister, Mary, working on his house, and writing Grand River news for the Leon Journal-Reporter. Leo was busy all the time and never liked to sit. He mowed his lawn with a push mower, rode his bike, and gardened. Leo’s hobbies were oil painting and shopping for antiques and collectibles. He worked two days a week at the Flower Box antique store in Grand River. Leo liked visiting with people in Grand River and traveling to Des Moines and Creston, Iowa often.
Leo was baptized as a boy into the old Baptist Church in Grand River.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lert and Nan McConnell; two infant brothers, Lert Junior and Fred LeVere McConnell; and sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Marvin K. Smith.
Survivors include his treasured friends, Bonnie Alexander, Melinda Mackey, Fred and Debby Wallace, Lane and Mary Davis, and Chris and Shana Kayes, all from Grand River, Iowa.Funeral services will be held at the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 16, 2017. Visitation is 9-10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in the Grand River Cemetery, Grand River, Iowa.
