Obituary ~ Betty Leone (Allen) Snethen Hindes
April 04, 1928 ~ January 22, 2017

Betty Leone Hindes, age 88, of Lamoni, Iowa, the daughter of Wilber Leland and Mildred Fannie (Judson) Allen, was born April 8, 1928, in Lamoni, Iowa. She died at Lamoni Specialty Care in Lamoni, Iowa on Sunday, January 22, 2017.

Betty grew up, attended school, and graduated from Lamoni High School in 1946. She married Richard Grant Snethen in Lamoni. They were blessed with two children, Crystal in 1951, and Doug in 1953. Richard was killed in a truck accident in 1955.

In 1956, Betty married Charles Gene Hindes. He had a son, Donnie Hindes. They lived in Lamoni then moved to the farm south of town in the 1970’s. Betty worked for the State of Iowa as a nutrition aide teaching Decatur County families how to make nutritious meals. For 27 years, Betty and Charles owned and operated Snethen-Hindes Automotive Rebuilders in Bethany, Missouri. Charles and son, Doug, did the rebuilding of alternators, starters, and generators while Betty did the bookwork. Later Doug moved to a different job so Charles did all the motor work alone.

In her free time, Betty enjoyed writing poetry and painting with oils, charcoal, and pastels. She was a member of the Community of Christ Church.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husbands, Richard in 1955, and Charles in 2010; all her siblings, Carol Keen, Robert Allen, Nina Konopasek, Wilberta Neal, and children, Leland Allen, Maxine Allen, and Charlotte Allen; son-in-law, John Yates; and grandson, James Yates.

Survivors include her children, Crystal Yates of Peoria, Arizona and Doug Snethen of Lewisburg, Tennessee; grandchildren, Timothy Yates and wife, Krystle, Terry Dierenfeldt and wife, Julie, and Stephanie Wescott; great grandchildren, James, Creation, Carson, Olivia, Storm, and Jordan; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at the Lamoni Community of Christ Church in Lamoni, Iowa at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 27, 2017, with Lorrie Long and Les Gardner officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Lamoni, Iowa. Arrangements were through the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home of Leon and Lamoni, Iowa.
