Hank, as he was known, grew up in Fayette and graduated from high school in 1951. He then attended Chillicothe Business School in Chillicothe, Missouri. He started working for the Rock Island Railroad as a telegrapher. His job location varied monthly. On February 16, 1953, he entered the United States Navy. He served during the Korean War and was stationed in Japan. After his honorable discharge on January 31, 1957, he returned working on the railroad.

On October 20, 1957, Hank was united in marriage to Roberta Ann Scott at the Corydon United Methodist Church in Corydon, Iowa. Later they lived in St. Louis, Missouri while Hank attended laboratory technician training. After completion, they moved to Leon, Iowa. They started working at the Decatur County Hospital, Hank in the lab and Roberta as a nurse. Seven years later, Hank transferred to the Leon Clinic laboratory where he worked until he retired at age 65, in 1998.

In his free time, Hank enjoyed being a gardener, handyman, and talented woodworker. He especially enjoyed making beautiful furniture pieces for his children and toy barn sets and dollhouses for his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He and Roberta were faithful members of Trinity Christian Church and loved helping out whenever they could. Hank truly had a servant’s heart.

Most importantly to Hank and Roberta was their family.
