Obituary ~ Frances Elaine (Horn) Mark
February 19, 1928 - December 28, 2016

Leon Journal-Reporter
Leon, Decatur County, Iowa

Frances Elaine (Horn) Mark, age 88, was born February 19, 1928, in Leon, Iowa to Grace (Bowman) and Frank Horn. She left this life on Wednesday, December 28, 2016, at Chandler Regional Hospital Medical Center in Chandler, Arizona.

She grew up in Leon attending high school and working at the family restaurant and movie theater. She married Russell G. Mark of Humeston, Iowa on April 30, 1946, in Kansas. They moved to Lincoln, Nebraska where she worked at the Western Electric plant until her first daughter was born. The family lived in Dallas, Texas for a short time and then moved back to Leon during the hospitalization of her second daughter. They moved to Bennington, Nebraska in 1952, where the third daughter and a son were born. In 1956, the family moved to Blair, Nebraska and remained there until 1971. They moved to Chicago, Illinois for a short period of time and then to Des Moines, Iowa. Frances went back to school and graduated from Salvador College of Hairstyling in 1973. The family moved to Joplin, Missouri where she worked as a stylist. Shortly after, she was divorced and moved back to Des Moines where she worked at the J.C. Penney salon until she retired in 1993. Her last move was to Sun Lakes, Arizona where she loved the sunshine and warm temperatures, having no desire to move back to the snow and cold of her roots.

Frances enjoyed gardening, both flowers and vegetables. She played golf in her earlier years, dabbled in painting and crocheting, and was an avid Nebraska Huskers football fan. She liked to travel, having been to many countries in Europe, Hawaii, to Jamaica twice, and most recently to Greece with her two daughters and grandson, Chad. Her main loves were her two pug dogs, Rascal and Markey. They were her constant companions and gave her much joy.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Grace and Frank Horn; daughter, Roberta Lee Mark, sisters, Pauline White and husband, Kenneth, Mildred Broman and husband, Charles, and brothers Bill, Kenneth and Donald Horn.

Surviving are daughter Patricia Porter and husband, Richard of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Linda Mark of Houston, Texas; Richard “Doug” Mark of Republic, MO; grandchildren, Chad Klein of Omaha, Nebraska, Adam Klein of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Stephanie Hughes and Ryan Hughes, both of Houston, Texas, and Richard Mark, Jr., and Matthew Mark and fiancé, JoAnna Nelson all of Republic, Missouri; step grandchildren, Tom and Michelle Porter of Newport News, Virginia, and DeeAnn Porter of Omaha; great grandchildren Matthew Mark, Jr., Mataya Mark, Brandon Mark, Kyle Mark, Denise Mark, Lucas Mark, Elizabeth Palmer, and McKenzie Mark, all of Republic, and Alexander Klein of Platte City, Missouri, step great grandchildren, Hattie Porter of Omaha and TK Porter and Marissa Porter, both of Newport News; sister Betty and husband Howard Lee Schoonover of Huntington Beach, California, sisters-in-law, Barb Horn of Leon, Iowa, Margaret Horn of Sun Lakes, and Eveline Horn of Garden Grove, California; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
