Obituary ~ Cathereine (Nightwine) Gardner
February 03, 1837 ~ November 24, 1910

Leon Reporter

Miss Catherine Nightwine was born in Columbia county, Ohio Feb. 3, 1837 and died in Decatur City, Iowa Nov. 24, 1910 at the age of 73 years, 9 months and 21 days.

The early years of her life were spent in Ohio. While still a young girl she came with her parents and many of their neighbors to what was then known as "The West". They settled in the southern part of Iowa and later in northern Missouri. On Oct 26, 1854 she was married to Wilson I. Gardner, who preceeded her to the Spirit world some six years ago. To this union, four children were born, one son and three daughters all of whom are living as follows: Frank of Decatur City, Mrs. Allie Tullis of Leon, Mrs. Lute Shelton of Decatur City and Mrs. Jennie Kalkofen of Russell Iowa. It was the privilege of all the children to be with their mother during her entire sickness and do all that willing hands could do and loving hearts could plan.

Since the death of the husband and father she has lived with Frank, the only son, who has been her stay and her support during the last years of her life. He has indeed been a loyal son.

Mrs. Gardner became a Christian when about seventeen years of age and placed her membership with the Christian Church at Leon where it remained for forty six years until she was called up higher. She was thus one of the charter members of the Leon congregation and knew all about its early struggles and hardships in its infancy. It is not often that one holds membership in a congregation for more than a half a century. She was the last charter member of the Leon church and while she is dead, the church still lives. Where can we find a better demonstration of the truth of the great Apostle, "Their Works do Follow Them".

The funeral services were conducted at the Christian Church in Decatur City by the Rev. J. S. Coffin of the Leon Christian Church after which the remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at Decatur in the midst of a large company of friends and relatives.
