Obituary ~ Jesse Burgess Garret
March 22, 1822/24 ~ February 04, 1895

Jesse B. Garrett was born in Henry County, Kentucky, March 22, 1822 and died February 4, 1895. He came to Decatur County with his wife and one child in 1855. His second wife died in 1864, and he was married to Mary E. Farnes on May 16, 1865. To them seven children were born, one boy and six girls, three of them passed away at an early age and all the remaining children were at his bedside when he passed away to eternity.

Major Young and he formed Company A, 17th Iowa Infantry in 1862, and participated in the seige of Corrinth and also the battle of Luka, the command of the regiment falling on Major Young. Lieutenant Garrett remained in command of his company and was severely wounded in the head at the battle of Corrith on October 4, 1862, which rendered him unfit for military service. He was discharged in the spring of 1863, from his wound and exposure, the results which caused his death.

He as a kind husband, father and brother, always ready to lend a helping hand to the needy. He was a brother to Reverend J.L. Garrett, founder of Methodism in Decatur County, and he served several years in the service for his Master. He was a charter member of the G.A.R. Post No. 251. His faithful comrades stood by him until the angel of death spoke peace to his weary soul. He leaves a wife, five children and six grandchildren to mourn his loss.

[Interment was made at Leon Cemetery, Leon, Iowa.]

NOTE: Jesse's gravestone gives 1824 as his birth year.
