Neil Walter Green, age 82, of rural Decatur, Iowa, was born April 15, 1934, in Decatur County, Iowa to Charles Franklin and Minnie LaVerne (McLaughlin) Green. He died at Lamoni, Iowa on Wednesday, November 2, 2016.

Neil grew up and attended school in Decatur County, Iowa. After school, he farmed with his parents. In January of 1957, he enlisted into the United States Army. In January 1959, he was honorably discharged. He returned home to work for Fairy McClure, after the death of her husband, Darold. Their daughter, Donna Jean McClure, was his pen pal while he was in the service. On October 16, 1959, Neil and Donna were married at the Leon Christian Church in Leon, Iowa. The couple made their home with Donna’s mother until in 1961, when she moved into Leon. They stayed on the farm and were blessed with a son, Donald Duane.

Over the years Neil farmed. For ten years, he also worked at Graceland College in the physical plant and then the security department. Neil was a member of the Burell Township Trustees Board from 1969, until current. In his free time, he enjoyed listening to country music, and fishing and hunting. He also attended legion meetings occasionally.

Preceding him in death were his parents; siblings and their spouses, Helen & Leland South, Virginia & Ray Waddell, Pauline & Don Young, Archie & Gertie Green, Arlene & Maurice Young, Dick & Martha Green, Marcine & Billy Jones, Ralph & Faye Green, and Ruth & Charles Reed; and brother-in-law, Don Cornett.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Jean Green of Decatur, Iowa; son, Donnie Green of Centerville, Iowa; sister, Eleanor “Ellie” Cornett of Mason City, Iowa; brother, Elmer & Toshiko Green of Lamoni, Iowa; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 5, 2016, with Rev. Terry D. Roberts officiating. Burial will be in the Leon Cemetery, Leon, Iowa.
