JOE CREES KILLED AT
MILL

- - -
Accident Occurred Last Friday Morning in
Grand River at the Crees
Mill and Produce House.

- - - - -
JOE CREES, one of the well known business men
of Grand River, was killed
Friday morning of last week at his feed mill
and produce establishment
near the depot in that place. He was at work
grinding some feed when
the burrs in the mill suddenly flew into
pieces and some of the
fragments struck MR. CREES on the head. He
fell into the arms of his
wife who happened to step into the mill just
a few minutes before and
was near him when the accident happened.

MRS. CREES summoned help and in a few minutes
a number of people were
there. Dr. Carr, who had been quickly
summoned, found that MR. CREES
was terribly injured and he was removed to
his home and Dr. H.R. Layton,
of Leon, was also called. The injuries were
too great to overcome and
he died a few hours after the accident had
occurred. Just what was the
cause of the accident is unknown, while it is
the opinion of many that
the mill was running at too great a speed
causing the burrs to explode.
MR. CREES was a popular man with all who knew
him. His untimely and
tragic death comes as a great shock to the
people of his town and the
entire county. The grief stricken wife and
children have the sympathy
of all. MR. CREES was thirty-eight years old
and leaves a wife and
several children. He had about $2,000 life
insurance. The funeral was
held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, a large
number of the people of that
section of the county being in attendance.

OBITUARY

JOSEPH ANDREW CREES was born April 3, l877,
and died at his home in
Grand River, Iowa, July 23, l9l5, aged 38
years, 3 months and 29 days.
He was the son of MICHAEL and MARGARET CREES
and was born and raised on
the old homestead near Grand River. MR.
CREES was married to NELLIE
BRAMMER, March 2, l902. To them were born
six children, all of whom,
with the sorrowing wife and mother are left
to mourn the loss of the one
they held most dear.

Our community was shocked and saddened to
hear that a little before noon
Friday, MR. CREES had been fatally injured by
a flying piece of his feed
grinder which had bursted. He was carried
home by friends as soon as
they could be summoned and Dr. Carr, of Grand
River, Dr. Mulcahy, of
Ellston, and Dr. Layton, of Leon, were
summoned and did all possible for
the injured man but he passed to the Great
Beyond the same evening at a
little past 9 o'clock, without having
regained consciousness. MRS.
CREES was standing just back of her husband
when the terrible accident
occurred but providentially was not struck by
any of the flying pieces
of the grinder.

MR. CREES was one of Grand River's most
energetic business men. For many
years he has run a feed store, buying cream
and poultry and his place of
business was always a busy one. He was
accommodating to all and did
business on the square. MR. CREES leaves
besides his wife and children,
his aged father, three sisters and one
brother. Just one month before
his death, his brother, WILLIS CREES, passed
away. The bereaved family
have the heartfelt sympathy of the whole
community in this their great
sorrow.

The funeral services were held at the
Methodist Episcopal Church Sunday
afternoon, Rev. E.B. Scoggan preaching the
sermon, the music being given
by a large choir from the churches of Grand
River. The church was
crowded and a large number could not get
within. The body was laid to
rest in the Funktown Cemetery to await the
great Judgement Day.
